Bloggers Do It Better: Military Chic

posted on: Tuesday, November 22, 2011

I've been wanting to participate in bloggers do it better for a while now, but I kept missing every challenge! I've been basically stalking Kristina's blog (Pretty Shiny Sparkly) for the past few months now, and finally, a new bloggers do it better challenge came up a few days ago! The challenge, style up a military inspired item. I didn't really have too much to choose from in my closet. An army green t-shrit, tights and jacket were pretty much my choices. I decided to go with the jacket.

And here are some other outfits I wore this jacket with in the past. I actually find this shade of green to be so versatile, and I wear this jacket often. The nice part is that it also has a detachable fur collar, but somehow I have not managed to photography that yet. Next time I guess.

Austra at Hifi

posted on: Monday, November 21, 2011

Saturday evening I went to see the band Austra (along with Tasseomancy and Young Galaxy) with a few friends at Hifi Club. It was really an amazing show. The energy from the bands just moves through the crowd and it seemed that everyone was dancing and having a great time. Probably my favourite thing was that the bands were at the merchandise table selling their own CD's and t-shirts so it gave fans a chance to meet the band members in person. I also absolutely loved that the lead vocals in all bands were women! The highlight of my night was meeting Katie of Austra and grabbing a few shots of her outfit. Thanks Katie!

Tuesday Morning

I'm so proud of my mom! She took these photos for me, and I think she did a great job. Last time I asked her to take photos, the second someone came walking by she turned around and speed walked away from me, pretending she wasn't taking photos! When I first started blogging I was always so shy when I had my camera out. It's funny after a little over a year of blogging you just get used to lugging a huge camera around and snapping photos everywhere. I'm still shy when someone I don't know is taking my photos, but  I definitely have become more relaxed since I first started blogging.

Catching Up

posted on: Sunday, November 13, 2011

This post is going to be a bit jumbled, but I thought I would catch up on some of the things that have been going on in my life. These photos are from back in September during my birthday week. I went to see a band called Braids with some friends. One of my favourite things to do is to see live music and discover new bands. I also spotted this girl wearing her scarf as a cape and had to snap a photo. I just love the way she tied it! Later in the week JP and I went out for dinner before we caught the Pearl Jam concert. That was definitely a memorable week.

This last week has been pretty great too. PARK put on an emerging designer forum on Saturday, which went really well. I feel so honoured to have been a part of it.  The forum started out with designers Paul Hardy and Lara Presber talking about their experience in the fashion industry, what its like to work as a designer in Calgary, and the manufacturing process. Next up was Liz De Swart talking about the business side of fashion design. RBC then gave information on business loans and the steps to starting a business plan. Yvonne Jeffery from the Calgary Herald presented after lunch on the media side of fashion and what reporters are looking for when covering stories on designers. Lastly, Karen Judge, a stylist in Calgary and the owner of Studio Gorgeous, spoke about the importance of knowing your customer and what buyers are looking for. Luckily the PARK team got to sit in on the forum and soak in the advice. I definitely learned a lot and left the forum full of energy and excitement and completely inspired. I have no intention of being a designer (my dream is to be a psychologist), but all of the speakers were full of enthusiasm, spoke from the heart, and were passionate about their careers. It made me feel excited about my own future career goals.

A Little Glitter

posted on: Wednesday, November 9, 2011

The other day I ended up going to a craft store, Michaels, with my mom and grandma. My mom and grandma were looking for wool for knitting and I was just keeping them company before we headed out for coffee. I ended up wandering down the paint brush aisle and was overwhelmed with happiness! I've only painted a little in the past, and haven't painted anything in over two years, so I was pretty surprised at how excited I became when I saw all the fresh, new painting supplies. I think this is a sign that I need to start painting and doing other crafty projects again. My mind is craving a little creativity. For now I decided to stock up on glitter and spice up my nails a little!

The Art of Fashion

posted on: Monday, November 7, 2011

Last Thursday PARK, DaDe Art and Design Lab and Lauren Bagliore teamed up to present The Art of Fashion, an exclusive runway, shopping, and fundraising event for the purpose of raising awareness and funds towards the prevention of human trafficking. Bagliore (pronounced bal-your-ray) has a "fashion from the heart" philosophy, and believes in using her career in fashion as a platform to give back to those in need. Lauren Bagliore is known for her delicately draped and versatile dresses and her edgy, yet feminine coats.

I was lucky enough to meet up with Lauren at her studio and grab a few "behinds the scenes"snapshots of her workspace, and then later snap some photos of the art gallery pre-event. As I mentioned in an earlier post, I recently joined the PARK team and was helping out at this event. It was a different experience to be on the other side of a fashion show, and I really enjoyed it.

Elbow Falls

posted on: Thursday, November 3, 2011

Well, the forecast is threatening snow for tonight and tomorrow, so I thought it would be a good time to reminisce about hot summer days. These photos were taken at Elbow Falls in July. A few friends and I drove out to the falls to spend a relaxing day in the heat, sun bathing on the rocks overlooking the falls. Let me tell you, it was absolutely stunning!! It was nearly impossible for me to stand in that water to take photos! The weather was hot, but the river is glacier water and was ICE cold!

Tonight is The Art of Fashion, A runway show featuring Lauren Bagliore designs. The event is being held to fundraise for prevention of human trafficking. The show is a collaboration between Lauren, DaDe Art and Design Lab, and PARK. The most exciting part? I recently started as PARK's newest Intern, and will be helping out with the show! I'm pretty excited and can't wait to share some photos of the show with all of you!

Trick-or-Treat

posted on: Tuesday, November 1, 2011

dressed as a bunny with my brother the cat on Halloween when we were little
This year I spent Halloween trick-or-treating with my little sister. The day started out with stopping by my sisters elementary school with my mom and dropping off some Halloween cupcakes and snacks for her school party. A little kindergardener ran up to me yelling "Hey, hey! Look at me! I'm a cutesy little avatar!" Little kids are so funny!

Later in the evening I met back up with my mom, little sister and my sisters friend at my parents house. It was so nostalgic walking around where I grew up, stopping at all the houses I used to go to when I was little. After filling up the kids bags with tons of candy, we drove over to a haunted house in my parents community. It was a Pirates of the Caribbean themed haunted house, and was surprisingly build by a high school kid in grade 10! There was a big ship in the driveway and the garage was converted into a spooky maze. We walked/ran through with kids in costumes jumping out at every corner scaring us! There was another haunted house that we drove by and wanted to check out, but rumour around the elementary school was that there were ghouls with chainsaws in this haunted house, and we couldn't persuade the girls to go inside. Maybe next year.
