Miss Representation

Last Sunday I helped out at the screening of Miss Representation, put on by Kim Flanagan and Church, My Style. The movie premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2011 and consists of a series of interviews exploring how the media's misrepresentation of women has led to less women in positions of leadership, influence, and power.  I would say that the main point of the video it to gain a better awareness on consumerism, become more responsible consumers, and to realize what we are supporting and what messages the media is giving to women and men. The quote that I really like from the movie is "You can't be what you can't see".  After the screening a panel of influential women in Calgary led a discussion with the viewers of the film on some of the actions we can take in our personal lives to increase women's value in society.
(Panel discussion featuring, Yvonne Jeffery | Life Editor of Calgary Herald, Ania B. | Model and Fashion Blogger, Cara Fullerton | Global News Anchor and body builder, Dana Kerford | Girl Power, Catherine Oshanek | Photographer and I've Been Bullied Campaign)

For those of you interested in this topic, here is a video of Jennifer Siebel Newsom, the Founder and CEO of missrepresentation.org speaking at the TEDX Women's Conference in 2011. I think this talk is a good breakdown of the main points and objective of the movie.

And finally, here is what I wore to the event.
